Skyline Drift

Surrounded by Denver's striking architecture, Skyline Drift is designed to lyrically soften the hard edges of the urban environment. The design of the piece itself features long, sweeping, colorful ribbon-like shapes that mimic the physical, fluid motion the artwork experiences in the wind. It is a visual echo of the high-altitude breezes so common in Colorado skies. While a vibrant celebration of color, my hope is that it inspires people to linger on the grass beneath it and provides pedestrians with a moment of serene contemplation—a fluid, floating oasis right in the middle of Skyline Park.

Inspired by the shifting cloud formations and high-altitude breezes that sweep through Denver’s downtown high-rises, Skyline Drift echoes the fluidity and movement of the open Colorado sky.

Approximately 12,000 individual streamers made from ultra-lightweight kite fabric are attached to an engineered mesh structure designed to respond dynamically to natural wind currents. Even in subtle breezes, the streamers move and visually blend into three-dimensional, dancing strokes of color above Skyline Park.

Skyline Drift belongs to Patrick Shearn’s Skynet Series, a collection of suspended kinetic aerial sculptures made from thousands of lightweight colorful streamers attached to engineered mesh. The installations respond to natural wind currents, making invisible local wind patterns visible through movement.
