Frankfurter Allgemeine captured Visions in Motion above Berlin’s Straße des 17. Juni during the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Frankfurter Allgemeine documented Visions in Motion in a video recap titled “Wünsche und Träume über der Straße des 17. Juni” — “Wishes and dreams above the Straße des 17. Juni.” The film captured thousands of handwritten messages moving above the avenue leading to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.
Visions in Motion was presented from November 4–10, 2019, as part of Berlin’s official festival marking the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Wall. Kulturprojekte Berlin invited artist Patrick Shearn and Poetic Kinetics to create an artwork that could symbolize unity rather than division.
The approximately 20,000-square-foot kinetic installation stretched about 450 feet along the historic avenue. Its rectangular form recalled the footprint of a wall, but the lightweight surface lifted, rippled, and dissolved into the air.
Around 30,000 messages of hope, memory, and possibility were contributed by people from Berlin and around the world. Together they transformed the site of a former border into a collective, constantly moving statement about freedom and connection.
